Festo has announced two new developments aimed at reducing downtime and simplifying machine safety. The AX Motion Insights Pneumatic application applies AI-based health scoring and anomaly detection to pneumatic cylinders, helping maintenance teams detect wear before failure and integrate data through existing PLC platforms. The new CMMT-AS servo drive series, on the other hand, reduces wiring complexity by integrating safety functions directly into the drive, while supporting STO, SBC, SS1, and advanced safety options for a higher level of protection.

The application detects anomalies in behavior and assigns each pneumatic cylinder a "health score" and a "failure risk indicator" that can help maintenance personnel determine when preventative maintenance is needed. It is designed to interface with Festo's Smartenance maintenance platform, acting as a plug-and-play component within that system.
Connectivity via a PLC function block transfers data to the application. It is compatible with Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Beckhoff controllers. The AX platform is an open system and can also connect to Festo or third-party components, making integration with existing hardware straightforward.
The application is available through Festo World; the maintenance engineer simply specifies the number of cylinders to be monitored, and the license is managed based on the cylinder count.
Two models are available: Basic (S1) and Advanced (S3). Both models feature internal Safe Torque Off (STO), Safe Brake Control (SBC), Safe Stop 1 (SS1), and built-in diagnostics. SS1 is a way to perform a controlled stop before cutting power, requiring an external timer. S3 models, in addition to the external timer, include another Safe Stop 2 (SS2) option, Safe Operating Stop (SOS), and speed control limiters.

Both drive series can be configured in the Festo Safety Configurator, which is part of the Festo Automation Suite. They will also be compatible with the upcoming Validation Wizard (expected Winter 2025), which will automate documentation and guide engineers through the configuration process.
These releases demonstrate Festo's further integration of condition monitoring and machine safety into everyday automation workflows. The addition of pneumatic cylinders to AX Motion Insights provides facilities with a clearer picture of wear before it turns into downtime, while the CMMT-AS servo drives reduce the complexity and cost of meeting safety requirements by integrating protections directly into the hardware. For engineers balancing uptime, compliance, and integration effort, both products point to a more streamlined approach to maintaining motion systems.
AX Motion Insights Pneumatic
Festo is leveraging AI to combat early wear and unplanned maintenance in pneumatic systems. AX Motion Insights Pneumatic is a pneumatic cylinder monitoring system that can help detect signs of wear early, before catastrophic failures, major leaks, and unplanned downtime occur.

CMMT-AS Servo Drives
Festo's new CMMT-AS series of servo drives offers simplified wiring and enhanced safety by incorporating some of the necessary hardware and connections directly into the drive. External safety mechanisms can be connected via hardwiring to digital I/O ports or over a PROFIsafe network for easy integration with Siemens safety PLCs.Two models are available: Basic (S1) and Advanced (S3).
