Cemvita and Radix announced significant progress in the front-end engineering phase of an innovative circular biofuel project in Brazil, aiming to convert crude glycerin, a biodiesel byproduct, into ultra-low carbon intensity biofuel.
Brazil has historically been a global leader in biofuels, particularly in bioethanol production. However, this project takes a different approach, with Cemvita utilizing proprietary bioprocesses to transform crude glycerin into a versatile, high-value biofuel. This biofuel can be co-processed in existing refineries and used in the production of Hydrogenated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA)-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
### Project and Collaboration
Radix has been responsible for developing industrial design, engineering, and scalability strategies, carrying out extensive work to industrialize Cemvita's bioprocesses. The company adapted equipment selection, plant layout, and integration strategies to Brazil's industrial environment, resulting in an approximate 40% reduction in costs.
Luiz Mello, Radix Energy Division Head, stated, "We are demonstrating how innovation and industrial engineering can work together to enable the energy transition." Luciano Zamberlan, Cemvita VP of Operations and Engineering, added, "We successfully overcame the challenge of adapting a project designed for the US to a tropical climate."
### Technological and Industrial Contributions
Cemvita's process aims to transform crude glycerin, typically a low-value byproduct, into low-carbon intensity fuel, making it a strategic input for biodiesel plants. Radix's engineering leadership opens the door for broader implementation of this technology and sustainable growth in the biofuel market.
### About Cemvita and Radix
- Radix, founded in 2010, is a company that provides customer-focused technology solutions and engineering services on a global scale.
- Cemvita uses synthetic biology to convert carbon waste into sustainable high-value biofuels and products used in sectors such as aviation, agriculture, personal care, and industrial manufacturing.
The project continues its development phases with the goal of reaching a final investment decision within 2026.
