  • Understanding when and where energy is consumed is a critical step towards improving industrial efficiency. Carlo Gavazzi's EMS power monitor combines current measurement, data logging, edge gateway functionality, and an integrated web server in a single device. Designed for scalable deployments, the system supports multiple plug-and-play meters and modern IIoT communication protocols, enabling engineers to monitor power usage locally or in the cloud and make informed decisions to reduce energy waste.

    Energy Monitoring for Industrial Applications​

    A significant step in reducing our carbon footprint is understanding where and when energy is consumed. Once we have this data, we can make changes to our processes and automation to reduce overall energy consumption and spikes. Recently, Carlo Gavazzi released a single and three-phase current monitoring device that is not just a current meter, but also an edge gateway, data logger, and web server. Up to 10 additional meters can be added to the EMS meter to create a scalable current monitoring system.

    EMS Current Monitoring System​

    The EMS is a Linux-based power monitoring system capable of monitoring three single-phase or one three-phase power supply. Data can be logged internally or exported via multiple supported communication channels. Configured via the integrated web server, the EMS can be easily set up and monitored within minutes.
    To monitor multiple circuits, the EMS can be connected to any of Carlo Gavazzi's ESY plug-and-play meters via a standard Ethernet cable. Up to 10 meters can be daisy-chained to a single EMS, creating a complete power monitoring solution.
    Both the EMS and optional monitors are DIN rail mounted and designed to be installed near protection devices within electrical panels. Connections are made with screw terminals and are compatible with multi-strand or single-strand copper wires up to 2.5 mm². An integrated LCD display can be used to identify initial issues or configure WiFi settings.

    IIoT Compatibility​

    A power monitor would be of little use without a method of viewing the data; therefore, the EMS is fully equipped with the latest IIoT communication protocols. Analysis data can be transmitted via BACnet, MQTT, FTP, SFTP, FTPS, and REST API. The EMS has built-in WiFi and can connect directly to AWS or Microsoft Azure.
    When remote access is required, no additional hardware is needed with the EMS. The MAIA Cloud SaaS web application provides remote connectivity and fleet management for energy monitoring and building automation devices. The application can be used for troubleshooting, commissioning, and firmware updates.

    Viewing Data​

    Being able to view and analyze data allows engineers to make informed decisions about energy consumption. With the EMS running its own web server, data can be easily accessed by entering the device's IP address into a web browser. Data such as voltage, current, frequency, and operating hours can be analyzed from the included dashboard. If you wish to create your own dashboard combining an EMS monitor network, the REST API can be used to collect data from each EMS device on the network and store it in a centralized database.

    First Steps Towards a Greener World​

    To solve a problem, we need to identify the root cause. Carlo Gavazzi's EMS system provides the information needed to find that root cause. Data collected from the EMS power monitor can be used to pinpoint when and where power fluctuations occur. Technicians and engineers can then begin to address the fluctuations, making the power system more efficient.
