ABB Robotics, in collaboration with the Swedish Standards Institute and industry partners from 11 countries, has developed a global and standardized method to evaluate the energy efficiency of industrial robots. As a result of this collaboration, ABB announced the first ISO Technical Specification prepared for measuring the energy consumption of industrial robots.

The new specification is planned to be completed in August 2026. This standard will provide end-users with transparent and comparable energy data, enabling them to make more informed purchasing decisions and contributing to the industry's reduction of its carbon footprint.

According to data from the International Federation of Robotics, more than four million industrial robots are operating worldwide. According to ABB Robotics, with companies aiming to reduce their emissions from energy consumption in line with the Paris Agreement, reducing the environmental impact of robot systems is of great importance.

Gianluca Brotto, Sustainability Director at ABB Robotics, said, "When there is no global standard, it is difficult for customers to compare the energy consumption of different robots and choose the most energy-efficient solution." He added, "While there are clear standards for measuring and comparing energy efficiency in products such as refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, and motors, there is no such standard for measuring the energy consumption of robots. This initiative will not only enable customers to make informed decisions but also help the industry reduce its carbon footprint."

    ### Features of ABB Energy Consumption Technical Specification
    • Standardized measurement of industrial robot energy consumption
    • Providing comparable energy data to end-users
    • Global, ISO-based technical specification
    • Planned for completion in August 2026
    • Aims to reduce the industry's carbon footprint

    ### Other Resources Related to Robot Standards
    • A3's updated industrial robot safety standards
    • What manufacturers need to know about the new ISO robot standard
    • Fanuc's hygienic SCARA robot and high-speed food processing with stainless steel Delta robot

This development will mark a turning point in the industry regarding the energy efficiency of industrial robots and will enable a more effective evaluation of environmental impacts in robot purchasing processes.
